10 Weirdly Awesome Things Women Do When Our Better-Half is Out of Town

We totally love our boyfriends/husbands/girlfriends (most of the time, at least), so we hate it when they have to go out of town, whether it’s for work or vacation. However, taking a little space from your significant other isn’t always a bad thing. Sometimes it gives us a chance to catch up on being ourselves and doing all of our weird female crap that we can’t do in front of our better-halves.

1. We can’t watch Game of Thrones but we can watch all the shit he won’t watch with us

When I found out my boyfriend was going to be out of town for not one, but TWO episodes of Game of Thrones (including the season 7 finale last night), it felt as if someone had just punched me in the gut. I was horrified! Not only did that mean that I can’t go on social media or the news for like a week and a half, it also means that I can’t even go to the supermarket or the f*cking office because it’s all anyone talks about. I debated watching the episodes without him and pretending to be surprised (“Jon Snow did what!?!”), but I’m not that good of an actress, and it would feel as dishonest as cheating on him (we are that serious about GoT).

It’s not all bad news, though. Boyfriend-free days are the perfect time to binge all of our estrogen-filled girly guilty pleasures, like Gossip Girl (so guilty of this), Sex in the City, or basically any show on Bravo. I literally spent an entire day last weekend watching “Snapped” on Oxygen and it was amazing.

2. Shop until we drop

Just hide the evidence.

3. Revive our weird single girl rituals

I don’t know about you, but I picked up some weird-ass habits when I was single. Shit like eating cheese and crackers in bed, reading gossip magazines in front of the TV or singing and dancing my ass off to really bad music. I try really hard to seem like a normal person around my boyfriend, so I generally keep my weird girl habits at bay. But when he’s gone, I do my own nails, eat copious amounts of ice cream straight out of the container, and put on one of those crazy-looking face masks that make you look like an alien. He never needs to know…

4. Spa day

Since my boyfriend basically tortured me with the whole GoT debacle, I was so stressed out that I decided a day at the spa would be just what I need. The truth is, when we both have 9-5 jobs during the week, and with everything else going on in our lives, I try to spend as much time together as possible, especially on the weekends. That means that a day at the spa (no matter how tempting) sometimes feels like I am taking away from our quality time together.

But, when the cat’s away, it’s a whole different story. Treat yourself to a relaxing day at the spa. We have the most amazing spa where I grew up, so whenever I get a day to myself, I like to spend it there being massaged and drinking wine by the pool. If it’s still too hard or too expensive to get away for an entire day, then head to the nail salon for a quick pick-me-up!

5. Nap queen

I nap so hard when he’s gone.

6. Run all of the errands

If you asked me five years ago, I literally could never have imagined a time in my life when I would enjoy running errands. Once I hit my 30’s, I came to the horrifying and shocking conclusion that I LOVE running errands. Sure, mindlessly driving to the dry cleaners and roaming the aisles at CVS isn’t the most stimulating or fun activity, but it makes me feel SO GOOD to get it done.

Again, when we’re working full-time during the day and spending nights with our SO, it’s hard to find the time to do all of the little things we need to do around the house. That’s why I literally get so excited to wash my car, do the laundry and pick up the house.

7. Wear our nasty sweats with all the holes

We all have them – that oh-so-comfortable-worn-in pair of hideously ugly sweats that we never, ever want our boyfriends to catch us wearing. Wear them all day long. And forget to shave your legs while you’re at it.

8. Catch up with friends

As much as we all want to be totally independent ladies who would never put a man in front of our friends, I think we have all been guilty at one point or another of neglecting our girlfriends for a relationship. To further complicate things, my boyfriend and I live about an hour away from most of my friends. With work and everything else going on in our lives, it’s hard to get out to see more than once in a blue moon.

When I found out my boyfriend would be gone, I made plans with all of my friends back home, and it was really awesome to spend some quality time with them. Plan ahead so you know your girlfriends will be available, and grab dinner or a drink, or just spend the day hanging out.

9. Plan a surprise for when he gets home

Even though we have a blast when they’re gone, we still miss the f*ck out of them. Whenever my boyfriend goes out of town for an extended period of time, I like to plan a little surprise for when he gets home. Usually it’s something small, like filling the house with fresh flowers or picking up a little trinket for him, but I know he appreciates it, and it shows him that I’ve been thinking about him while he was gone.

10. Wine

I told you this would be on all of my lists.

What other weird and awesome things do you guys do when your SO is away?
